Comparing contract and permanent roles

When you compare a contractor day rate with a salaried job, remember that contractors usually aren't paid for holidays, sick days or bank holidays, and they fund their own pension and equipment. A common rule of thumb is to assume about 46 billable weeks a year instead of 52. Set Weeks/year to 46 to see a more realistic annual figure for contract work.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert an hourly wage to an annual salary?

Multiply your hourly rate by the hours you work per week, then by the number of paid weeks in a year. For example, €20 × 40 hours × 52 weeks = €41,600 a year.

How many working hours are in a year?

A standard full-time schedule of 40 hours a week for 52 weeks is 2,080 hours. At 39 hours a week, which is common in Ireland, it is 2,028 hours. At 37.5 hours, common in the UK, it is 1,950 hours.

Should I use 52 weeks if I get paid holidays?

Yes. If your annual leave and public holidays are paid, use 52 weeks. If you are only paid for the weeks you work, as many contractors and seasonal workers are, reduce the number of weeks.

Why is monthly pay not simply weekly pay × 4?

Most months are slightly longer than four weeks. There are 52 weeks in a year, so a month averages 52 ÷ 12 = 4.33 weeks. Monthly pay is annual pay ÷ 12.
